Health and Welfare
The GWP is a generally healthy breed and all the responsible breeders are endeavouring to keep them this way.

The KC require all breeding stock to be health tested for the following conditions before having a litter.

Hip Dysplasia
Dogs have to have their Hips X-rayed and examined by a panel of experts at the Kennel Club and they are scored on the quality of their Hip Joints. Ideally, scores should be beneath the Breed mean average.

It is recommended that testing for Elbow Dysplasia is done at the same time.

Von Willibrands Disease
Dogs are DNA Tested for VWD before breeding. It is a blood clotting disorder and can cause excessive bleeding.

There are a few other things that have raised their ugly head. Epilepsy is a serious condition and can be hereditary, so it is vital that affected dogs are not allowed in the Gene pool. It is recommended that dogs are not bred from before they reach the age of 3, as it usually surfaces by then.

When buying your German Wirehaired Pointer puppy you should make sure that both parents are health tested. Minimum recommended requirements are; Hip Scoring (the breed mean average is 11), Clear of VWD (hereditary or by blood test) and Heart Tested clear.
